Road King Test Drive

http://www.cruisingmotorcycletours.co.uk/

Above is the link to Gary's site.
He seems to spend most of his time on motorcycle tours. Lucky sod.

I have secured a Road King for my trip and thought it might be a good idea to try one out before I go the States.
So I booked a test ride at Sycamore Harley Davidson in Uppingham, Leicestershire.
They let me test one for about an hour and a half, got some advice from one of their customers as to the route to take and set off.

First impressions 'God this is heavy and where do I put my feet?'
After a few hundred yards I got everything where it should be and began to enjoy the ride. Engine was surprisingly quiet. Unfortunately this meant I hit the rev limiter a couple of times.
Gear changing took a bit of getting use to but with the riding position it became second nature after a time.
Power is good but the lack of a rev counter was a problem.
Rev counter can be added as an optional extra and added to the speedo on the tank.
Having ridden the Road King on minor roads and dual carriageways I think it is ideal for the trip I am doing.
It's a bit of a handful at low speeds and turning round in a confined space needs to be avoided at all costs.
All in all I enjoyed the ride and the cruise control will come in handy in America. The people at Sycamore were very helpful and I would recommend a visit.

I rode over there on my BMW R1150R Rockster, getting back on the Beamer after the Harley was an interesting experience, to be able to hear and see what the engine was doing was great. For me the Harley will be wonderful on the open roads of the USA but over in the old UK give me my BM every time.
